The Mermaid And The Moon

Mermaids may swim through the moonlight,
As they do the waves in the ocean.
So on a night when the skies were clear
Little Minerva left the sea.
She traveled to the world above our world,
On a beam of silver,
Swimming with ease,
Through the gravity that so binds us.
She entered the atmosphere, then left the sapphire Earth behind.
She was in another sea,
This one black where hers was blue,
And endless, it seemed.
Little Minerva moved slowly then, her eyes silver
And wide and round as the coarse moon grew to fill them.
She swam in suit with other mer; many of them.
Entranced, they pushed onward through the empty void.
The moon was a coral reef of a different kind.
It was a home to many things and Minerva,
Still young and fresh, would see them all.

In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it's the exact opposite.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924) Czech writer.
