Poem Commentary

Loss is  the theme. Penned in 1988, and reflective of nature and human tragedy.

The Last Rose

          I have seen the Rose
  Tightening, thickening outer petals
           As the temperature dips,
              And I do understand.

           From the outside,
          The light and vigor
        Of life are squelched,
    And Death comes, outside in.

              And it must hurt,
    As do I, physically, psychically,
          As though and inner trust
        Has been wantonly crushed.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
