    THE GIFT OF SUE

I've got a gift that's hard to wrap
She stands 'bout five foot six--
A best friend from so long ago
              She served some 'time'
              We both ached so.

The evils of a drug are pure
    'Bet your name on that~~
For Sue was caught in such a trap
             'Took a fifteen-year-long nap
              while earning two degrees.

And as she slept the Lord watched her
    'Kept her safe from harm~~
'Took the children she loved so
              and shaped their hearts
              so love would flow.

    'Parents tried 'bout everything--
Gave it to the Lord... and then one day,
    'Twas twelve thirteen,
             God evened up the score
and opened wide her prison door.

God seared His sword thru crooked courts
Set records straight, He cleaned her slate.
Thanks be to God, who heard our cries,
We praise your name, hands lifted high.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
