"His First Try"
In those long ago days of his all but forgotten past
When his spelling was atrocious and his reading wouldn’t pass
He wanted to write a story for the whole world to read
Yes a story with no hypocrisy, malice or greed.
His world back then was no more than his county home
Coming from a poor family little did he ever roam.
Into the next county or across the state line
So his story would be made up of what little he could find.
On the wall hung a calendar, with many words he could not define
From the local RX drug store you'll remember the kind.
Each page held an ad each one of them would say
This stuff is good for you come in and buy it today.
From the calendar he named his characters from what the thing read
In his dreams he was a novelist regardless of what others said.
He wished this to be the story that would stand on its own
So he searched for material throughout his country home.
The years have gone by and the story forgotten too
But it was the beginning of the thing he most wanted to do.
Today he writes poetry and every now and then a song
And the book he is writing is surely coming along.
The moral of this poem is so simple but true
You can do what you want if you really want to.
So keep chasing your dreams don’t let life turn you away
Or the world will only remember you had nothing to say.
