ODE TO A FRIEND
A CHILD ONCE CAME TO ME, SO WEAK & SO SMALL
SHE LONGED TO BE FREE, I STOOD THERE IN AWE.
THIS CHILD TOLD HER STORY, WITH TEARY EYES SHE SPOKE,
SHE CLAIMED NOT THE GLORY, BUT EACH HEART SHE BROKE.
HER STORY WAS SO SAD, YET IT WAS VERY TRUE
IT TOOK ALL I HAD TO REVEAL THIS TO YOU.
SHE SPOKE TO ME, HER FEARS ONCE AGAIN
BUT I COULDN'T SEE, HER WORLD CAVING IN
THE YEARS HAD LONG PAST, THE CHILD GREW BRAVE
HER TEARS DIDN'T LAST, SHE COULDN'T BE SAVED.
AS HER HEART TURNED COLD, SHE REFUSED TO CRY
SHE BECAME VERY BOLD, THOUGH I NEVER KNEW WHY.
SHE CAME TO ME TO SPEAK OF HER PAST
A WOMAN I DID SEE, FOR CHILDHOOD NEVER LAST
I LISTENED ONCE AGAIN, TO ALL THE WORDS SHE SPOKE
BUT I NEVER GAVE IN, MY HEART WASN'T BROKE
HER FEARS WERE THE SAME, AS TOLD LONG AGO
I NEVER KNEW HER NAME, JUST THE STORY THAT SHE TOLD.
THE WOMAN WAS SO DISTRAUGHT, SHE NEVER CAME AGAIN
THOUGH ONCE SHE HAD FAUGHT, A BATTLE SHE COULDN'T WIN
BEFORE ME SHE ONCE FELL, SHATTERED & TORN APART
I IGNORED HER TALE, THOUGH SHE POURED OUT HER HEART
IF ONLY I HAD LISTENED, MAYBE I COULD HAD CHANGED
ALL THE HELL SHE ONCE LIVED IN, TO ME IT WAS SO STRANGE
FOR SHE SPOKE TO ME SO TRUE, HER SIMPLE WORDS OF FEAR
THE STORY WE ALL KNEW, BUT NOT ONE OF US COULD HEAR
SHE ONLY TOLD THE TRUTH, THAT INCEST MADE HER A SLAVE
THE CRIME AGAINST HER YOUTH, SHE CARRIED TO HER GRAVE.
