    nightfall

watching the sunset on another day,
wishing one human chould chase it and get it to stay.
    the light begins to fade,
the air cooler on my skin,
and suddenly reality begins to set in.

I fear to lose the light of day,
    knowing deep down,
     the moon as my witness,
that i take this night on completely defenseless.

    all by myself,
with no one to love, hold, or care for,
    with nothing all,
i take a deep breath to take on nightfall.

Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that's what the poet does.

    Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) U.S. poet.
