    Lies

    You did it so well,
those lies you told. I believed each one, I never thought
to question, I never thought to ask.
    Why?
    You said I couldn't win,
That this was my fate. No one would believe.
No one would care. No, not one.
    Why?
Where the strength came I could not say.
Your lessons were cruel, but learn them I did.
    Trust no one or anything.
    Why?
You fooled yourself, thinking I was mindless.
That I didn't have the courage to stand alone in the fight.
    That I had no will.
    Why?
you called me weak, that I would not heal.
Never once expecting your loss to be so great.
    Why?
    You took what you could
while the time was ripe, now I stand firm
your strength was but a fantasy.
    Now!
    You gave me the Victory,
Even though you didn't know it.
    My words are my weapons.
    The truth my shield.
    Now, you deception has ended.

When power leads man towards arrogance, poetry reminds him of his limitations. When power narrows the area of man's concern, poetry reminds him of the richness and diversity of existence. When power corrupts, poetry cleanses.
