Inevitable
You entered my life
As one enters a church
Quietly;
Respectfully;
So inadvertently was your presence
I didn’t notice your drawing closer
As one does in an act of contrition
Gently;
Bashfully;
So inevitable was your presence
I didn’t question it
Didn’t mind your simple smile
Or the depth of your eyes
I found solace in your kindness
And felt compelled to explain my reasoning
As one does in confession
I didn’t hesitate with your doubts
And didn’t argue your reasons to pull away
I simply accepted you
Inevitably I longed
Inevitably you left
Quietly;
Respectfully;
I shouted your name
But words failed me
Inevitably I panicked
And grasped for air
But then realized
Inevitably you would return
Inevitably
