How to Get Published 101This will be a much shorter thread for me since this is not an area of my expertise. I have been published several times but certainly will not claim to be an expert. I do know this site and the people on the site are an excellent resource. I know many poets on this site that have been published and several that have their own book of poetry. I will defer most of this thread to the Ins and outs of OP team as there are several members that are quite experienced and have much more information and advice to pass on. RE: How to Get Published 101Getting published depends on what the author wants and expects. I have two books published through Publish America. Publish America will publish your work, provide a cover design, they do little editing, and no promotion other than submitting to Amazon and other book internet sites. They also offer the authors special deals to try to entice the author to purchase and sell. They are a print on demand company. You can go to a vanity press and pay to have your work placed in a book format and purchase to sell as many as you want. Main stream or the big houses are very hard to break into. You really need an agent. Be prepared to submit query letters, a synopsis, and receive a lot of rejections. Selling books is a buisness, and they do not want to take a risk on unknown authors. Not an expert on this topic, only what I have experienced. |

RE: How to Get Published 101Like Rhymer I have a book published through PublishAmerica. I have had to basically do all the promotions for my book. I have started my second manuscript that I will be sending into PublishAmerica by the beginning of next year... One thing about PA that I did and do like is that they didn't charge me to publish my book. Everyone has their pros and cons about being published. Choosing which publisher you chose is what you want and want to accomplish the most out of being a published author. You have to put in what you want to get out of publishing your work. RE: How to Get Published 101Every Year, Writer's Digest Books publishes a new edition of "Poet's Market". It's a comprehensive list of of markets (I.E. - publishers of magazines, fanzines, anthologies, contests etc.) that are looking for poetry submissions. Each listing gives detailed instructions on the particular requirements for submission, and also provides pointers on how to get attention for your work. It should prove invaluable to those desiring to get their work in into print. My advice would be to start submitting to local/regional publications, especially in your own area of the country in order to get the best chance for a positive response. I hope this information proves useful : ) |

Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular.
