The painting was completed in 1821, and hangs in the rotunda of the United States Capitol in Washington, D. C. The painting depicts the surrender of British Lieutenant General John Burgoyne at Saratoga, New York on October 17, 1777, ten days after the Second Battle of Saratoga. Burgoyne was entrapped by our militia, Surrendered to Gates after Battle of Saratoga. A French fleet at Yorktown brought the struggle to rest, The British had no more stomach for the contest. General Cornwallis his command surrendered, And the Treaty of Paris was duly rendered. Thanks to the French who came to help us, There were others we could trust. The Royalists and the Hessians we unseated, And good King George we duly defeated. Dear is the fight for right and liberty, Blood writes freedom on the pages of history, Greed and lust of power make men savagely rage, And senselessly build themselves an evil cage. Reason is trampled by the feet of might, There is no just cause for warring plight, Mother’s tears, ageds’ woes and children’s fears, Awful wounds, wanton death and mortal cares. Devastation and mis’ry, wasteful sound In the air, on the sea, on the ground, The devouring fires, obnoxious smells, And fallen men and their death knells. If man possessed more the mortal trails. Without which he savagely fights and fails. No one wins, everyone loses ,. Though the conqueror struts and poses. THE SURRENDER OF LORD CORNWALLIS, Oct, 19.1781: 
This painting depicts the British Major General Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis (1738-1805), surrendering to French and American forces after the Siege of Yorktown (September 28 – October 19, 1781) during the American Revolutionary War. This oil painting on canvas was commissioned by American artist John Trumbull in 1817. The dimensions are 365.76 cm by 548.64 cm (144.00 in by 216.00 in). It was purchased by the United States government in 1820 and is now located in the United States Capitol rotunda in Washington D.C..jpg[/img]
