Elements of Poetry

I ran across this site and thought it could be extremely useful to beginning poets, as well as the seasoned writer looking to hone their skills.

What exercises? I'm lost. Hoping this site would help me be more critical. Helpfully critical about my work and others. Like what elements to look for.

Really good exercises . I've been perusing them daily. I would anyone wanting to challenge themselves further would give these a shot.

Elements of Japanese Poetry

Good Morning Ms, June,

Can you find time to teach us haiku?

I read all of Bashos work. I loved his a idea of a traveling poetry school,
that is what inspired me to ask Papackzi to start this here at OP.
Maybe also Tonka, and other Japanese forms.

Your time will be appreciated.

We all learned in elementary school that Haiku is a poem about nature consisting of three lines and a syllable count of 5-7-5.

Let's begin by tearing that page out of the book. (We will get to the page about poetry having to rhyme in later installments)

A Haiku is a poem with a nature based theme. However, the rule of 5-7-5 has been nearly abandoned in contemporary English poetry because the 5-7-5 count refers to the Japanese equivalent of a syllable, the onji or the morae, which are much shorter than the English syllable. Adhering to the 5-7-5 rule tends to make English Haiku wordy and stiff. Think of Haiku as a poem that can be spoken in one breath.

It would be interesting to see how each of us sees a similar scene in a similar season.
like the opening of the first flower in spring...
