Paper or Plastic?

Paper or Plastic?

not talking about groceries or mathod of payments here, but poetry.

There has been a lot of buzz on here of late about "21st century poets" and what not, and I was wondering, do "21st century poets" still put pen to paper, or do you all just take to they keyboards?

Personaly, there i just someting about the ink of a Pilot G-2 pen that unleashes my word-hoard.

How about anyone else: paper or plastic?

Re: Paper or Plastic?

When I write something for the first time I always use my "lucky pen" and write it in my composition book but than obviously I have to transfer it onto the computer eventually to get it to microsoft word but when I write something it is never done on the computer I just transfer it to there.

Re: Paper or Plastic?

yup.
pencil or pen
to paper (scraps?)
to journal (bound?)
to computer (edited?)
is it ever done? (maybe?)

Re: Paper or Plastic?

i find ... that it's too easy to edit on the computer
when i try to compose electronically,
my digits delete the words
before they've had time to ... mellow properly

even in tech writing ... i like to make notes first, get some phrasing going, capture some truth, then compose ... when i HAVE to compose electronically, i like to make a "note" doc first, so i can save the original phrasing ... separate from the "first draft" where i'll try to make a cohesive, rational piece ...

more a function of my (over?)-critical mind, i think, than the efficacy of plastic or paper ...

but for poetry ... definitely ... not ... near ... the hum ... of electrons ... in high gear ... when composing. TOO NOISY. can't hear what i need to hear to write what i write ... smile

Re: Paper or Plastic?

I hear you there man.

I was just curious because as there was talk about "21st Century poets" I was confused on the criteria of what one was, and how it was different than anyother poet.

is it the subject? language? medium? does classification rally matter at all?

Re: Paper or Plastic?

Pen and paper, most definitely.
There is just something about feeling the pen slide against the paper with a slight rasp, and watching the ink spread on the clean white surface of the paper. I love it. Its the physical act of putting down your own thoughts and words, that means the most to me.
Typing is so mechanical, there is no feeling. Just the meaningless tap-tap-tap.
And when I get excited I can't type properly anyway...
I may have all my stuff saved on a flashdrive, but I also have it written down in a notebook.
Some things never change, no matter the century.

BDI smile
LOL!
YOU ARE HERE: YOU ARE A 21ST CENTURY WRITER!!!
LOL! smile

and KTI!: i was thinking exactly what you were thinking just now as i composed this (with a blue sharpie into a journal of acid-free paper, lightly lined, 4x6, bound, leather cover, 176 pages, with a red ribbon to mark my place and a magnetic clasp to close it ... i write in random journals simultaneously, depending on what's going on ... but always try to date what i've written) ... ANYWAY smile i'd like to share! :

Sensual
Sound
Cotton paper
Preserves
Ink scratches
Curves Preserved
Mind
to Hand
I Was There.

The Moment
Captured.
Of creation.
(Dig it!)

Analog memoirs
Hi-Res ... The Moment ... Captured.
Digi copies
PALE!

LOL!

The words
are not
the whole Moment,
But may they capture
the Essence, even as
the Evidence
passes into dust.

*I hear you on the tools of craft for unleashing the full moment. LUV! -dh

Re: Paper or Plastic?

BDI, Star drift started this 21st. century poet line on his thread. He defines it as a poet who began writing poems after the year 2000. Of course it is more of a figurative perspective that a literal one. When did you write your first poem and what was the catalyst?

Re: Paper or Plastic?

Hey DancingHawk, that is awesome. I love it!
The blue sharpie gave me a bit of a giggle.
I have to keep a small notebook and a pen on my bedside table, because for some reason I always get my best inspiration when I'm trying to fall asleep, and I know I won't remember it in the morning. I don't know how many times I've had to get up and go hunting for pen and paper in the dark, without my glasses. Quite a few of my poems were first sparked into creation in the late hours, when I was drifting somewhere between reality and dreams.

Re: Paper or Plastic?

From a living relic: I sketch out on paper and edit, then when comfortable with product, will start to post. There are very recent times when I wrote on the fly, and after posting, found errors that weren't exposed by spellcheck. Deleted poem to correct and realized the deletion was only copy I had (OUCH!!) So, you see, it becomes a complete re-write. (Happened on "Doubts Prisoners") The preference is to have the hard copy to fall back on.

Re: Paper or Plastic?

Hi Follwer writers:

I like both . I choose neither because I tend to still write with a pen and paper.
I like to post also. But I have thousands of note books full with writings since 1980 so I have to say I am Using both ways to write. cheese

Re: Paper or Plastic?

I also use a tape recorder, like when I'm driving, or at work.
Press record and speak, this way is actually fun, lol.
I just also want to mention, that the music industry, went thru changes as well...
From analog to digital.

Re: Paper or Plastic?

yeah ... that was part of my thought ... as music goes from analog to digital, something is lost, tho perhaps something is gained in the ability to distribute, albeit at lower quality ... same thing with all digi work, really, even the writing ...

and LOL!!! i also use a small recorder ... for myself, and in recording conversations (with permission, of course) ... captured some REALLY interesting stuff that way ... grandparents' stories and things ...

I immediately had to ask myself, "What does she do when she's in the shower?" It seems I always get some great starts, but have they made underwater pen and paper yet? Thought about wordslingers suggestion for tape recorder, but getting zapped doesn't appeal to me either! I have resoved myself to praying that anything that really needs to be written will surface in its good time and I will use whatever medium that feels comfortable. It's frustrating, though, because there are ... thoughts and words written on everything from a 2x3 inch scrap of paper to my work on the computer. It feels scary, however not to have a hard copy. I lost a lot of work that I did early this year because of a computer crash. Me thinks I need a better filing system... Nice topic. surprised

LOL!
and ... aren't there voice-activated recorders nowadays?
or ... grease pen and plastic sheet, just to get the line down?
on a string, hanging somewhere handy?
oooooh ... or a whole wall in the shower you could write on ...
that would be the hard core committed way to go smile smile
smile
worth a small interruption ... if that's where your muse visits you, Darlin' ... it's worth trying to capture smile smile

Re: Paper or Plastic?

If a voice-activated recorder is used, the sound of the water would turn it on, unless you have really quiet water shock

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
