I watch a lot of indie films.

the last one that affected me was called "Adam's Apples". A finnish film with english subtitles, about a priest taking in exconvicts, including one recalcitrantly nasty neo-nazi. About the strength of acceptance and the role of faith in others, ourselves and life.

Repeats the phrase from the BeeGee song "How deep is your love?"

Wordslinger I think "That was then this is now" was a follow up to "The Outsiders"...we read those books in school...my older brother, who literally has read only one book in his entire life, read "The Outsiders" and loved it...the movie was pretty good too...I know the subject is movies, but if you liked "That was then, etc.," you may also like "Pigman"...it was a really good book, but I'm not sure if they made it into a movie.


For myself for movies, I am a classic movie buff; I have a large library of old movies...always wanted to look like Elizabeth Taylor in 'Cat on a hot tin roof'.....not sure how much inspiration I get from these old movies, but in general I would rather watch something that made me feel happy at the end instead of scared or depressed...life itself has enough of that sort of thing.

I enjoy movies that put together human struggle and triumph,leaving me with a new frame of mind. Grapes of Wrath, One flew over a Cuckoos Nest,Fried Green Tomatoes, and comedic ones like, Bruce Almighty,ect. If it doesn't send the message that reality comes in all colors, it wastes my time, and I've done enough of that!

I like history movies now as I now have grown, I just seen John Adams,

3:10 to Yuma, very awesome, you will like it.
Movies help me write, lets me know whats in, and what writers could've done.

Anything with Russell Crowe best to date is the remake of 3:10 to Yuma...one of the better remakes of a classic western
Anything with Kenneth Branagh (though some are not as good as others)

Any classic B&W romance (has to be B & W) There is no better Mr. Rochester than
Orson Welles

And when I'm in the moods - movies that make me laugh and some that make me sob my guts out.

I use movies to escape (for a while) all the mess that's going on in the world.

Wordslinger I totally agree about the quality of movies; While there are some good movies out nowadays, I still much prefer the classics to the new stuff...too much blood, gore and sex in these new ones for my taste.
I just watched Fred Astaire in Royal Wedding...it was great! I love those old movies that make me happy, and, I know this is gonna make me sound like an old lady, but the women were more beautiful in those days, and dressed much better...although I'm sure many men here will disagree with me!

My favs are "Goodfellas", "The Godfather" "The Deadliest Game" with Patrick Moriarty and Meryl Streep, "Fellow Traveler" with Ron Silver and Daniel J Travanti, "Sophie's Choice", "Looking For Mr. Goodbar", "Nobody's Fool", "Midnight Cowboy", "The French Lieutenant's Woman", "Damage" and anything else with Jeremy Irons. Also, a whole slew of Foreign Films, including "Like Water For Chocolate", "Burnt By the Sun", "The Three Husbands of Dona Flor" with a young Sonia Braga (which I watch without subtitles being that it's in Portuguese), and Peixoto (another Portuguese language film).

To sk - it was Aramaic and was a totally stunning film.

To Wordslinger - what was really cool was that his horse knew his whistle.
And the chug of that train engine, with no one speaking, was just like a heartbeat.

I'm pretty big on the classics. I like stars like Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Doris Day, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, Petula Clark, John Wayne, etc. I Love Francis Ford Copolla. I think that's how you spell it. I love the stuff he does with S. E. Hinton, like "The Outsiders" or "Rumble Fish". Mickey Rourke is awesome in Rumble Fish. I love the classics

Oh yeah, my gulty pleasure is that i love "Say Anything" with John Cusack.

I agree with raggedypoet, 'August Rush' is a terrific film, we covered that in its own thread it was so good. Recently I watched 'Into the Wild' directed by Sean Penn which is based on an incredible but true story, I highly recommend it.

One of the most inspirational actors for me is Robin Williams. I was never a huge fan of his style of comedy, I prefer stand up to improv, but as an actor he is top shelf. I mean 'Awakenings', 'Dead Poet's Society', 'Good Will Hunting', 'What Dreams May Come', 'The Fisher King', 'Good Morning, Vietnam', the list goes on and on. And he was in 'August Rush' I mentioned too.

Other personal favorites are 'It's a Wonderful Life', 'Glory', and 'The Pursuit of Happiness'.

I have no favorite movie, although i find many can be inspirational...

"The Power Of One" book is actually better then movie.....and the story about the lonliness birds i just love. I liked the movie. Read the book twice

I try to stay away from dramas........and i hate slasher movies....
I loved the "Color Purple" lol (i know a drama) and i think any movie i can sit although way thru more then a couple of times is an awesome movie...also, i love old movies...to many to name.

All great movies. I like Pulp Fiction w/Travolta, The Fifth Element w/Willis, Casablanca w/Bogart, Vertigo w/Novak, Like Water for Chocolate, Niagara and The Misfits w/Monroe, King Kong, all three, the original Frankenstein, Saving Private Ryan and Big w/Hanks, all great works of art, and many others, too many to list. I have seen Adam's Apples and I thought it was excellent too. I think that some movies lose luster over time, but the great ones won't.

Harvey with James Stewart is by far my favorite movie, I'll watch it over and over again. I still hope one day to have a pookah of my own.

However, for the most part, I like movies purely for escapism. Big critter movies (the older and cheesier the better), really bad science fiction, and movies where things go fast and and blow up (preferably at the same time) are my cinematic drugs of choice.
