Poem Commentary

living in chicago noted for the blues, watching martin scorcese's documentary
the blues our national treasure inspired me
to look deeper into the music and explain the
birth of the blues and what it meant to me.

birth of the blues

house of blues is where it's at
bb.king will bring lucille
and sing the thrill is gone
and when love comes to town,
you'll feel the thrill and the love
all in one night no seats available
standing room only,you'll be moving
to bb's music when he starts to wail,

chicago blues is where it's at
if you don't know where the blues
came from, sit back and i'll give you
the news,picking cotton down in
mississippi bloody fingers from those
prickly thorns in those cotton bulbs
then picking up a steel string guitar
and becoming a master of a picking style

from the highs of his picking style
to the lows of his limited words
two extremes joined together
and although they were complete
opposites,deprived of learning words
combined with mastering the feelings
they lacked in words with the picking
style they strummed their way

to make you feel the suffering they
were feeling everday,being a slave
 taking your integrity away
not allowing books to learn from in any
way turned out to be ,the two extremes
that brought the birth of the blues
and recorded their pain in a unique way
the power of the human spirit to survive
and find a way to record their history
and show music another way
giving birth to a new sound called the
blues a mystery at the time but today
a part of history and one of the greatest
stories that lives on with courage singing
the blues.

The true philosopher and the true poet are one, and a beauty, which is truth, and a truth, which is beauty, is the aim of both.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet (1803-1882)
