Against the Current
Treading water, head barely above surface.the tide is coming in fast, ready to encompass;
to drag me to the bottom, drown me in my sorrows.
Ready to extinguish, ceasing my tomorrows.
Someone please help me, save me from this fate.
I'm not ready to go to Heaven, to see the pearly gates.
Not ready to admit defeat to this azure tidal pool;
hurry, before the current gets too strong and I will start to lose.
The fight for my life, the fight against an underwater snare.
Someone hurry and toss me a line, help me wake from this nightmare.
But no one wants to save me, I'm out on my own.
I'm forced to battle with the current alone.
The water envelopes me like a watery tomb,
I open my eyes to squint through the gloom
at the light of the sky, getting dimmer and dimmer.
I knew this would happen, I've never been a good swimmer.
I'm no match for the torrent beneath me
Though I scrabble blindly trying to get free
It's no use to fight, I finally surrender
yielding to the ocean's mercy and splendor.
The last thing I see before I die
is your face floating before me, all mocking and lies.
